My Lunch at Beast and Butterflies

Restaurant : Beast and Butterflies
Address : 90 Robertson Quay
#01-00 M Social Singapore

Dish : Lobster Porridge

Porridge came in a very heavy stone earthen pot. The half Boston lobster occupied like half of the pot. The flesh was fresh, super sweet and chunky. Accompanied by a whole abalone that had a wholesome flavour. The bestest was the very tasty lobster broth that took 6 hours to prepare. What you get is a smooth, rich and mellifluous soup. Rice grains were not boiled down to till fine. To me, the texture of the grain which were a tad plump was imperative, to soak up the umaminess of the broth. I threw in chilli padis for heat and it gave the broth an added dimensional yummilicious level. A full bodied but yet light broth that was amazingly delish and addictive.

Suitable for people who craves for porridge, or when one feels under the weather, or simply for light and easy on the tummy feel.

Recommended to try.

Dish 2 : Cody Mee

My lunch partner ordered this dish. Baked Atlantic cod with superior soy sauce, braised mushroom, broccolini and crispy egg noodles.

Egg noodles were fried till crispy. The cod was baked to perfection and had a very wonderful tender sweetnesss which was balanced off by the soy sauce. Sauce was on point, not too starchy or thick. A great accompaniment that added moisture to the crispy egg noodles. In one plate, you find the sweet, salty, soft and crunchy textures dancing in unison with each other.

A not too heavy mains which is just right for the smaller eaters. A very pleasant dish indeed. Recommend to try.

This was not an invited meal and are paid for by myself.

Thank you to Anne @milleniumhotel for the company.

Montana Singapore (Media Invite)

Montana Singapore recently underwent a minor refurbishment. The now defunct doughnut space had been taken out and converted to more seating with windows letting in natural light.

The menu has also been revamped boasting of new mains and new desserts.

Below is the brand new space of the wine bar, Anarchy.

1. Crab burger with Yuzu slaw ($24++)

A patty with a mix of crab and seafood. Nicely seasoned. Accompanied by tangy yuzu slaw, the citrussy component helps to tone the heaviness of the seafood. Quite a compact burger but a tummy filler. But some might find the price a little on the high side.

2. Peking Chicken confit with waffles ($16.50++)

Instead of the common duck confit, Montana replaced it with chicken leg. Sous vide in oil and roasted after with 5-spice marinade. The skin was crisp and flesh was flaky and tender. A plum sauce dip for acidity which balanced off the various spices.

3. Miso Brown Butter Linguine

Similar to carbonara, this is a simple meatless pasta with cherry tomatoes. Alittle creamy but had quite a flavorful smoky finish. Suitable for vegetarians or those who crave for a quick and easy meal.

4. Bangers and Mash ($18)

A fusion of east meets west. Century egg blended in with the mash which was abit grainy.  Sausages were drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette and I do find it a tinge salty. A dish which some have to get used to.

5. Coffee Kaya Coconut Freakcake ($14.80)_

Eating this made me go back to the good ole days where the simple pleasure was eating the biscuit gems.

Smoky Nutella Freakcake

I do love chocolate. This is my preferred freakcake between the two. The kaya freakcake was too sweet for me as it was overpowered by kaya cream whereas the nutella was more spongy and only a thin layer of cream was spread in between layers. But if you have sweet sweet tooth, this would be up your alley.

6. Regular coconut cold brew ($6.80)

The ice ball is actually coconut infused. When it melts, it blends in with the espresso. The finish will be a tinge of coffee and a light coconut aftertone. A taste for the discerning palate.

This newly revamped menu was a bold move by Ying. The mix of east west ingredients plus the re-introduction of the childhood favorites was brilliant and unique. It looks like an exciting menu for the young and the young at heart or those who wants colourful flavors dancing on their palates.

This was a media invite. Thank you Ying and team for hosting us.

Shukuu Izakaya (Media Invite)

Izakaya main focus is drinks. But for Shukuu Izakaya, the emphasis is more on food.

With lunch sets going at between $15 to $25. With every set, one can choose to pick a serving of salad from 3 salads offered. Potato salad, salad (mostly greens) & roasted eggplant with sesame. I chose the eggplant simply because I love eggplant. Cooked to slightly mushy and tossed in a creamy sesame sauce, it was rather fragrant. I personally felt the sesame was abit heavy and overpowered the natural sweetness of the eggplant. However it was the best and most unique of the 3 salads offered.

The premium Kaisen Don set ($25) consisted of akaebi (red shrimp), hamachi (yellowtail), scallops and ikura. My favorite was the hamachi. Fresh and had a dainty natural sweetness that one do not dip into the soya sauce. Just eat it on its own and it tasted like it just came from the sea. Considering the reasonable portions, this is value for money.

The Katsu Don is a new lunch set. Pork breaded and baked in egg. Whilst I liked the flavor of the baked egg, I do find the pork piece alittle thick and tough.

Shukuu Izakaya is in a convenient location. Lunch hours are always packed with the office crowds. So be early if you crave for fresh and reasonable dons and sashimi.

Thank you Shukuu Izakaya for hosting.
